What Is PageRank?
PageRank is an algorithm used by the Google search engine to help determine the order of web pages in their search results.
Despite what you might expect, PageRank is not so-called because it ranks web pages, but is in fact named after Larry Page, one of the co-founders of Google. PageRank scores are a measure of the importance of a website; the more important a page is deemed to be, the higher it is likely to rank in the search results.
The PageRank metric is not the only measure used to determine the order of search results. Google now keep details of all their algorithms hush-hush, but PageRank was the very first algorithm that the company ever used. It is still used to this day in a modified form.
Google PageRank Explained
Google PageRank is an algorithm, which is basically just a set of mathematical rules. It calculates a score for a web page based mainly on two key things: the number of links to that page, and the quality of the web pages that those links are coming from.
Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the founders of Google, based the idea on a similar system used in scientific research. It uses the number of other papers that reference a specific piece of research to measure how important that research really is. The key difference that PageRank has is that it also takes into account the quality of these backlinks.
So for example, one web page could have lots of links from pages that themselves have quite a low PageRank. Another web page could have only one or two links. But if these links were from high-quality pages with good PageRank scores, then this page would rank higher on the PageRank metric.
The formula also includes something called a damping factor. This is intended to take into account that an average user’s interest will wane the more pages that they click. It means that direct links from high-ranking pages are worth much more than if they come via three or four other pages first. This is because a user’s interest will drop with each link that they click.
How Often Is PageRank Updated?
The frequency of PageRank updates is something that is much harder to judge than it used to be.
For many years, the Google toolbar that you could install at the top your browser featured a PageRank tool. This showed the PageRank score of whatever page you were visiting directly in the toolbar. Using this tool, you could easily see if your website’s PageRank changed significantly, a surefire sign that the algorithm had been updated.
In 2013 however, Google announced that they were no longer updating the PageRank scores in the toolbar, and in 2016 the feature was removed altogether. This led many people to start asking: is PageRank important any more? But Google themselves confirmed that PageRank was still being used by their search engine.
And as recently as this year, Google updated their patent for the PageRank algorithm, making it easier for the algorithm to reward lower ranked pages that have high authority in a specific niche. So it is clear that PageRank continues to be updated, and will do so for the foreseeable future. But Google is keeping when and how this will happen to themselves.

Increasing your PageRank is not the silver bullet that it used to be, but is still a crucial part of getting your page higher in the rankings.
